Thank you all for your answers to our ‘Question of the Week’ – Should mobile phones be allowed in school? You’ll find all answers that we received below:
I think phones should be allowed in every school
I think you shouldn’t be allowed mobile phones in class because it can be a distraction. I think you should be allowed to have your phone but it has to be turned off.
One other thing I’d love is Online homework.
My bag is always heavy walking home from school so that would be useful!

No I don’t think phones should be allowed in schools because people would be looking at their phones all the time and not listening to the teacher or looking at the board. Sarah
No I don’t think phones should be allowed in schools because they are too distracting and other people would be listening to the person on the phone. Owen, Oisín, Logan
No I don’t think phones should be allowed in schools because children might ring or text their friends in other schools on their break but the other children might still be learning in class. Harry
No I don’t think phones should be allowed in schools because they might be dropped and get damaged or dial a number by accident.Jamie F. Bláthnaid Áine B. Rebecca
Yes I think phones should be allowed in schools in case someone gets hurt in the yard and you need to call their Mum or Dad. Barry
No I don’t think phones should be allowed in schools because people might look up answers to questions on their phone instead of checking in a book or asking the teacher. They mightn’t learn as well then! Jamie G.
5th class & Mr. McNicholas at Rush National School.
We here in 5th class, think there are both advantages and disadvantages.
One advantage is that they could be used for research projects, once the class is supervised.
One disadvantage could be the children would not exercise if they were aloud in the yard.

To Tommy it kind of be useful to have mobile phones in school. You can send text messages on them, you can do coding on them, do calculating, play games and watch youtube. I guess the only downside would be that you would have to answer a call every time. But anyway’s what was your first phone?.Bye.
Manister National School
Manister NS says NO to mobile phones in school for children.
They would cause distraction.
The mobile phones could be broken easily.
However if teacher keeps the phone during the school day and then returns it to the pupil when they’re going home its not a bad idea.
I think mobile phones should be allowed in school
I think mobile phones should be allowed in school because in case of an unexpected half day or a bus got delayed then people could call their mam. When days start kids would put their phones in a box at the top of the class so they won’t be on them.
I think you should be aloud to have phones in school in case you need to ring home if it’s an emergency. Yes I know people are going to say “oh but That is what the offices is for” but it could be something personal you wouldn’t want them to hear that’s why I think you should be aloud your phone in school.
I think phones should be allowed in every school

I think we should be allowed to bring in mobile phone because of there is an emergency we will be able to call 999.
Andrew.H, 6th class, St.Ultans National School
My opinion on being allowed have phones in school is that on one side it can be a distraction for pupils and might stop people from talking to each other and some people might feel left out if they don’t have a phone but on the other side maybe pupils have to stay back because parents are late or if they are going to a friends house. That is my opinion.

Yes they should be allowed, but only if they are turned off during lesson time. They might be useful in case you start walking home alone from school and need to make an emergency call.
Mr. Conneely’s 2nd class in St. Philips JNS in Dublin 15.
We think phones should be allowed in school for the following reasons;
– If you need help and the teacher is busy you can get help on your phone. E.g. how to spell a word, etc.
– If its raining and you have to stay inside you could just play on your phone.
– Also if its raining and you’ve to walk home you could just text your parents to pick you up.
– You could use the camera for projects and art.
Thanks – we love watching the show everyday at lunch!

We like teen news. Our age group is 14 to 17. We think that mobile phones are a good idea. We can use them for maps, calculations, research and taking photos.
6th class, St Annes
We think that phones should be allowed in school because of the following reasons:
- For when you are walking home or after school activities
- In case of an emergency.
- In case you forget your keys and your mam/dad are late
However, we think you should be responsible and have the phone turned off in your bag.
