Thank you all for your answers to our ‘Question of the Week’ – Should children be allowed to have bank cards? You’ll find all answers that we received below:

Rachael Ryan 6

I think kids SHOULD have credit cards because they won’t lose them and their parents can control them. On the other hand they could be very vulnerable to giving their pin away to their friend and they could take advantage of their money.

Emmet Cassidy

I think children should have their own bank cards because it would get them to be responsible and it would prepare them for when they’re adults and they have a Debit and Credit card!

Derec Mooney,Age 9, Scoil Bhride, Co.Kildare

Disagree:

Aoibhe,Kate and Ciara believe should not have bank cards because it could be dangerous.

Hugo thinks they are a great idea and he would enjoy using one. He does think there should be a limit on how much is put on the cards and can be spent in a transaction.

Bóinn (pronounced ‘bone’) believes that using a card teaches responsibility and prepares you for when you are old enough to have an unrestricted card.

Mary Help of Christians GNS, Navan Road

-‘I think it’s not a good idea because children might spend their
money on unhealthy things like sweets and things that they don’t
really need’

Edmondstown NS, Dublin 16

Yes, it would be much easier to keep track of our money. – Will

If you lose your card in public you can just cancel it so you don’t get money stolen. – Caolinn

It’s good because because we can have our money in there, and you can put it in your pocket so it’s good. – Nacho

I think it is good to have a bank card because it would not be wasting your parents’ money. – Turlough

I think it is a good idea for 9-year-olds and over to have a bank card because it’s good for children to learn to be responsible with money for when they are older. – Ava

I think it is a good idea for children to have a debit card because even though there is a chance that you might forget your PIN if you pick something you know like your birthday you probably won’t forget it. – Ciara M.

I think it is a very good idea because personally I already know what code to use if it happened and I would not forget the number and a debit card is harder to lose so I think it’s a good idea. – Alex

I believe that it is a good idea for children to have a debit card because it gives them responsiblity to look after their own money. – Tom

I think it is a bad idea to have a debit card because kids like to have money and not tell how much they spent. – Ellie

Debit cards wouldn’t be good for kids because their parents wouldn’t be able to stop their kids from spending their money on anything they want. – TJ

I think it is a good and bad idea. It’s good because if you can keep all of your money together but it can also be bad because the kids could tell strangers or anybody and their money could get robbed. – Aoife

I think it’s a bad idea because the children could spend it on drugs and alcohol and hide the evidence and children don’t think sometimes and could give someone their pin number. – Lucy

I would say yes but I think that children should only be allowed to put one hundred euro and under on it. – Joe

I think it’s a bad idea because children might lose it and it’s a good idea because all your money is there. – Ciara O’C.

We here in 5th class think YES – Children should be allowed to have bank cards if parents have control over it because it could give children a good level of responsibility and it could prepare them for the real world.

Lily O Brady

I think children should be allowed their own bank card. It saves them from asking their parents for money and gives them a chance to prove to their parents that they are reliable and responsible. There for I think bank cards are a great idea but others may differ.

Julia Iwanicz

I think children should be allowed their own bank card. It saves them from asking their parents for money and gives them a chance to prove to their parents that they are reliable and responsible. There for I think bank cards are a great idea but others may differ.

Padraig Kennelly

No children should not have bank cards because they would spend the money on sweets.

5th & 6th Class, Scartaglen National School, Killarney

No l think they are putting too much responsibility on the child Even if they think they are old enough. CHARLIE

Yes I think children should have bank cards because they will make children responseplyJack o Donoghue No because it is two much responsibility for kids. Mikaela B No beacause it simpler to give them pocket money –Alan

No because if they had no money in the cards they would forget about them. Children are not as responsible as adults with money and may spend their money on pointless items. Maybe over 16’s should be considered as a suitable age as it would be good practice for adulthood. Children might not look after their cards as much as adults do and they may break them or lose them. MÁIRE C, MUIREANN W, CILLIAN R

Children should not have bank cards because they could lose their pins or forget them Aidan

No, Because it would be too much responsibility for the young children Tara

No because the parents would be counting on the children to take care of them and it would be to much pressure Katie

Yes children should have bank cards so that they won’t have to be counting out there money it would be easier just to have your money saved onto the card. Shauna ,Mollie and Máire

It will prepare children for when their adults and know how to use them Muireann R

Yes It will teach them how to be responsible Orlaith

Yes, we think that children should have bank cards because if you lose a recite at least it will be on your phone . And if your mom can keep track we think you should be allowed. Ciara,Jessica,Evan

Scoil Áine Naofa

I don’t think children should be allowed bank cards because most children abuse money and children might be careless and loose their card or forget their pin number.

Kene 3rd class

I think it is a good idea to have bank cards for children because your parents will know what you are buying and how much you are spending. It’s like a piggy bank!

Oisin 3rd class

3rd class in Belgrove Senior Boys School in Clontarf

  1. No, I think children should not be bale to have bank accounts or bank cards, because if they are careless with them they might show their PIN number to their friends. If their friends remembered the PIN they could take money out of the account. – Diarmuid Caulfield, 3rd Class, Belgrove.
  2. No, I don’t think it is a good idea for children to have bank cards because they might take money out and spend it on something they don’t need. – Robert Swift, 3rd class.
  3. I think that kids should be allowed to have a bank card because it encourages them to save their money from a young age. The bank card is good because it allows them to spend their money easily when they need to. – Liam Murphy, 3rd class.
  4. I do not think children should have a bank card because it is very likely for kids to forget their PIN. Therefore, it would have been a waste of money to get them one. I’ll stick to the law and wait until I’m an adult. But for the children who think otherwise, if your parents get you one, you should write down your PIN on a piece of paper. – Jack Dowley, 3rd class.

5th and 6th Class, Ardee Educate Together National School, Ardee, Co. Louth
We think credit cards are a good thing for children to have as it would give the children more responsibility and help them to become more careful and respectful of their money in the future.

It is also easier to manage all of your money in one card than have a lot of money and change in a piggy bank or wallet

6th Class White from Alexandra College

This is why children should have a bank card:

You learn to be more responsible.

You learn how to save money.

Your money is safe.

You feel more secure about where your money is.

It prepares you for adulthood.

A lot of children have Leap Cards, and in our school lunch cards, so we should be well able to use/look after a bank card.

This is why children shouldn’t have a bank card:

They can easily loose it as it is quite small.

They could spend all of their money on sweets.

They have the danger of getting it stolen.

If children were getting pocket money every week they would have to constantly keep going to the bank and lodging money and that would take forever!

They could accidently give their pin number to a stranger or a friend.

It is a very big responsibility for young children.

Kyle Gilsenan, Bohermeen N.S, Meath

I think kids should have bank cards but that you would have to be a bit older, because they would be good to save your money up in and you could keep track of it very easily. Although I don’t think younger kids should have them because they could forget their pin very easily and they can be very vulnerable if they have it with them.

5th class, St Benedicts and St. Mary’s N.S Raheny Dublin 5

I think bank cards should be allowed for kids to have so that they can save money responsibly. Please show this on your show.

Jade Christie

Yes, because I think they should have bank cards so they can experience

  1. Also I think it will be easier so that they won’t have to worry about the money

getting lost because it will be in the bank.

Fifth class St Malachy’s BNS Edenmore Dublin 5

I think NO! Children should not be aloud have credit cards because it can cause hazards like kids dropping it and someone piking it up and stealing their details. Some kids might leave it down and forget it.Some kids may overspent because thy are greedy. Most kids are great at their responsibilities and others don’t have the responsibility to take care of an item as precious such as a credit card

Aaron Rocke O’Dwyer

I am 100% sure that kids should have bank cards and here is my reason. The reason is that it is getting kids ready for adulthood so it helps them to be responsible with their money.

Stephen Hanlon Sheils

I think kids should have bank cards because it is more convenient than carrying the money.

It will teach kids how to be responsible and independent . Your parents could monitor what you spend it on.

Max Hayden, 5th class

I don’t think kids should have credit cards because if they lose them the parents will have to deal with their could be a lot of money on the card and if they lose it the kid will go angry and it will be the kids responsibility.

Evan Supple

Eimear’s 4th class in Newbridge Educate Together in Co. Kildare

As a class, we really don’t think that it is a good idea for children to have bank cards. We know that it would give the children a bigger responsibility for their own money, but we don’t think that children under 18 are old enough to have that responsibility. We think that children could loose the bank cards or share the pin codes of their cards with others.

We would like to stick with our piggy banks in this class.

Lucy Hayes, 5th Class, St. Nessan’s National School, Limerick

I think that children shouldn’t have bank cards because they would spend too much money. On the other hand, they are a good idea as we wouldn’t lose our money if we had bank cards. The new contactless payment means your money isn’t as safe though.
