Funerals were held for more than 60 people who were killed when soldiers from Israel opened fire on Palestinian protesters yesterday. Thousands more were injured. It happened in a part of the middle east called Gaza.
Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting on and off for many years .
After the second World War, in which 6 million Jews were killed, Jewish people wanted their own country and the State of Israel was created in 1948.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people lost their homes when this happened. And to this day Israelis and Palestinians do not get on and what happened yesterday is part of that.
Palestinians want to be able to return to the homes they once had, and create their own country.
Some Palestinian groups have used violence to try and achieve this.
Israel controls the border with Gaza which is a tiny area home to almost two million Palestinians.
Life is extremely difficult there because it’s hard to get goods in or out, people can’t move about freely and there is a lot of poverty.
Violence between Israelis and Palestinians flared up again yesterday.
The Taniste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, summoned the Israeli Ambassador to a meeting this morning to express Ireland’s outrage at the level of the death and injury in Gaza.
The UN Human Rights office also strongly condemned the Israeli action.
The funerals of those who died are being held today and it is Naqba day, when Palestinians remember and mourn the loss of their homes during the establishment of Israel.
Yesterday’s violence happened on the day that the new US Embassy opened in Jerusalem. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future country.
